| 11/13 | Pilobolus - Pilobolus, Tennessee Theatre 7:30pm, Pilobolus, the arts organism, germinated in the fertile soil of a Dartmouth College dance class in 1971. What emerged was a collaborative choreographic process and a unique weight-sharing approach to partnering that gave the young company a non-traditional but powerful new set of skills with which to make dances. The group was immediately acclaimed for its startling mix of humor and invention and Pilobolus soon became a self-sufficient organization, its members choreographing, dancing, managing, and publicizing their own programs. |
| 11/15 | Bruce Bruce - Bruce Bruce Tennessee Theatre 8:00 PM Saturday, November 15th Doors open at 7:00 PM All comedians want to be funny, but few can be described as truly hilarious. Bruce Bruce can claim the elusive ability to make audiences break into laughter not only during his performances, but also for hours afterwards as they recall the things he says. Bruce is irreverent and lovable at the same time, with a girth to match his huge personality and stage presence. Bruce arrived on the comedy scene with a natural talent that eventually garnered the highest ratings ever as host for Black Entertainment Television (BET) on its tenth anniversary Comic View program. Bruce, who is sometimes referred to as the "mayor of comedy," cites Milton Berle, Rodney Dangerfield, Flip Wilson, and Cedric the Entertainer among his personal favorites. Describing his own style as "old-school" comedy, Bruce's honest humor and improvisational style have earned him lots of fans. Bruce's over-the-top ratings for his performance as host of BET's tenth anniversary Comic View show in 2001 scored him a return engagement to host the same show in 2002. His talent appeals to many. Although he can keep his comedy clean, eliminating profanity, and still make his audience laugh, Bruce is equally skilled at delivering adult humor. He just doesn't believe a comedian has to be risqué to be funny. He is so good at comedy he makes it look effortless. With a passion for his craft, he infects his fans with laughter, leaving them wanting more. Sales Information: Tickets go on sale Friday September 26th, 2008 $33.50, plus applicable service fees. Umphrey’s McGee became popular for their improvisational take on hard prog-rock like that of Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa. Their taper-friendly jaunts across the area college bar and party circuit built a solid grassroots following that propelled them into the national scene with a fierce debut at the inaugural Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in 2002. At Bonnaroo, Umphrey's rubbed elbows with groups like Widespread Panic and Trey Anastasio and sold copies of their debut studio album Local Band Does OK. After that, Umphrey's McGee became a staple on the festival circuit, releasing several successful albums and making appearances on shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live. Co-headlining the show is Tennessee’s own Will Hoge, whose straightforward American rock includes singable choruses, catchy hooks and the always-anthemic Hammond organ. Hoge’s recently signed a record deal with indie label Rykodisc who released his fourth studio effort, Draw the Curtains. The album is a sultry rock epic with strains of country, soul and the kind of air-guitar-worthy licks Hoge has built his career on. |

| 11/21 | Iron & Wine - Iron & Wine, Bijou Theatre 8:00 PM Friday. Iron & Wine is the stage and recording name of folk rock singer-songwriter, Samuel Beam. The last that we heard form Iron and Wine was the six songs comprising Woman King released in 2005. What distinguished Woman King from its predecessors was the deepening integration of spiraling, dense opuses with intimate confessionals. On The Shepherd's Dog this integration is complete. Compositionally, it is Iron and Wine's most ambitious and accomplished recording to date. It’s also the most satisfying. While many of us learned of Iron and Wine by way of Sam Beam's tender and spare rendering of The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" on the Garden State soundtrack, those who dug deeper discovered a classic American tunesmith with a precocious musical signature. |
| 11/21 | Larry the Cable Guy - Larry the Cable Guy Knoxville Civic Coliseum 8:000 PM Friday, November 21st Doors open at 7:00 PM The man who added the catch phrases "Git-R-Done" and "Lord, I Apologize" to the American lexicon has proven himself one of the most successful comics of the early 2000s. Dan Whitney, known better as Larry the Cable Guy, claims he was born in the back of an El Camino during a Foghat concert. His drawl may sound Southern, but Larry was raised on a pig farm in Pawnee City, Nebraska. "Redneck" is a term he is not only fine with, but endorses. His one-liner-filled act soon caught word-of-mouth fire in the South and brought him to the attention of television. His debut CD, “Lord, I Apologize,” appeared in 2001 and has since been the “Dark Side of the Moon” of the comedy charts by sticking in the Top 20 for two years running. In 2002, a Comedy Central airing of “Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie” became the network's highest-rated movie in its 12-year history, even with the DVD widely available. “Larry the Cable Guy: Git-R-Done” became his first solo DVD in 2003, and a year later, Larry, Foxworthy, and Engvall would turn their tour into the highly-rated television show Blue Collar TV. “The Right to Bare Arms” appeared in March the next year. | 11/23 | Hinder - 94.3 the X presents Jagermeister Music Tour featuring Hinder w/ Trapt Rev Theory, TBA Jager Band Valarium 7:00 PM Sunday, November 23rd Doors open at 6:00 PM Let nothing "hinder" your appreciation of the subtleties purveyed by this Oklahoma City fivesome, who are collectively dedicated to bringing back the good old decadent days when sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll weren't dirty words but a way of life. Hinder's debut Universal Records effort, Extreme Behavior, is filled with flick-your-Bic moments of arena-rock grandeur, all crackling dual lead guitars, ethereal four-part harmonies and soaring beat-your-chest rock vocals, taking a page from timeless groups like Bad Company, Aerosmith, and the Rolling Stones, among others. Indeed, it is lead singer Austin Winkler who infuses Hinder's often-bitter sentiments of regret and forgetting the past on songs like the tongue-in-cheek "Bliss" and "Better Than Me" with flesh-and-blood humanity. "It's more about getting things off our chests," he says. "And it's lyrics you can understand.” Announced on their tour and in several interviews, a new album is in the works, with a song titled "Thing for You." Their new album, Take It to the Limit, will be released in November. | 12/3 | MIsfits - Misfits w/ The American Plague Valarium 9:00 PM Wednesday, December 3rd Doors open at 8:00 PM “It started as a twisted dream"...30 years ago in the small town of Lodi, New Jersey. It was there in April of 1977, at the dawn of the punk movement, that Misfits were born. Taking the title of Marilyn Monroe's last movie as their name in a move to immortalize her image singer Glenn Danzig and bassist Jerry Only set out to make an impression. They wound up making history and creating a legacy that's power has not only stood the test of time, but also transcended into an entirely new generation. Lineup changes followed and by early 1980, the band coalesced around co-founders Danzig and Only along with guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein (Jerry's youngest brother). Throughout the span of their career, Misfits audience has developed into an army of "fiends" (the term for die hard Misfits fans) generating more interest today than ever before, although Danzig has since gone solo. Today, The Misfits remain more aggressive, more topical and more sought after than ever before. Fronted by Jerry Only (Bass/Vocals) with former Black Flag alum Dez Cadena on guitar and original Misfits drummer Robo still behind the kit, they continue to sell out shows and draw thousands of fans night after night around the globe. “When fans come to a Misfits show, they get a band who gets up there and gives them all they’ve got,” says Only. “We give them the real thing - that’s how we’ve always done it. At a show, everyone's just part of the band, there's no them and us - we're all us.” It is this inclusive approach and attitude of dedication and devotion to fans that have kept the group alive. | 12/3 | Bowfire - Bowfire, Tennessee Theatre, 8:00pm, Bowfire, the hottest new show to hit the stage, is quickly becoming a major international success. It is at once an exceptionally high quality music experience and a fast paced theatrically staged show. Bowfire has continually proven itself to be a "must see" event everywhere it is presented, with audiences clamoring for more and standing ovations routine. Bowfire presents an "All Star Show" of the finest lineup of fiddle and violin virtuosos ever assembled on one stage. It takes its audiences on a musical journey that moves seamlessly from Jazz, Classical, Bluegrass, Celtic, Rock, Gypsy, World, Texas Swing and Ottawa Valley and Cape Breton styles and mixes in incredible step and tap dancing and a beautiful voice. All of this gets wrapped around a fast-paced show with first class production values that include great sound, choreography, dramatic lighting, set design and costumes. The Bowfire company is composed of virtuoso string players who are at the forefront of their respective styles, combined with equally gifted and respected backup musicians: piano/keyboards, bass, drums/percussion, guitars and cello. Fiddlers in the company are world-class step dancers and tap dancers. This avalanche of talent is brought together under the guidance of Creator and Artistic Director, Lenny Solomon and Broadway acclaimed Stage Director, Stafford Arima. Formed in June 2000, Bowfire made its debut performance the following month at Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany. Audience response was wildly enthusiastic, and the group was subsequently invited to perform on the Governor-General's Awards telecast, the Canadian equivalent of the United States' Kennedy Center Honors. |

| 12/5 | Old Crow Medicine Show - Tennessee Theatre, 8:00 PM, Old Crow Medicine Show (OCMS) play old-time string music that's fresh, energetic and distinctly American. Still getting to know their instruments, the players first met in New York, rambled across Canada and then settled for a year in North Carolina to hone their sound: a twangy evocation of sideshow carnivals hopped up on corn liquor. With their slappy hambone rhythms and jug-band harmonies, these young upstarts sound like old pros. |
| 12/6 | My Brightest Diamond - Square Room - 4 Market Square, 8:00 PM, My Brightest Diamond is spearheaded by Shara Worden, granddaughter of an Epiphone-playing traveling evangelist, fathered by a National Accordion Champion, and mothered by a classical organist. Having a family of musical wanderers who migrated across the U.S. every few years, the landscape and the musical influences were constantly changing. Spanish tangos, Sunday morning gospel, classical and jazz were the accompaniment to her home life. Shara assembled a coterie of musicians to accompany her with bass and drums, strings, wine glasses, and wind chimes and thus the sound of My Brightest Diamond was formed. This year Diamond releases their sophomore album, A Thousand Shark’s Teeth, originally meant to be a more classical, string quartet affair, the work slowly evolved and refined itself over a period of six years. |
| 12/7 | David Byrne “Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno” - David Byrne “Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno” Tennessee Theatre 8:00 PM Sunday, December 7th Doors open at 7:00 PM David Byrne is well known as the musician who co-founded the group Talking Heads (1976’88) in New York. On record and in concert, the band was acclaimed by critics and audiences alike; more importantly, however, they have proven to be extremely influential. Talking Heads took popular music in new directions, both in terms of sound and lyrics, and also introduced an innovative visual approach to the genre. In 2002 Talking Heads were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During a band sabbatical in 1981, Byrne teamed with Brian Eno, the producer of much of the Heads' work, for the collaborative effort My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, a complex, evocative album which fused electronic music with Third World percussion and hypnotic vocal effects. Over the last decades, hundreds of artists in genres ranging from DJs to alternative to electronic have all borrowed from My Life in the Bush of Ghosts‘ ideas and claimed its influence. PLEASE NOTE: There is no opening act for this performance. The show will begin promptly at 8 pm. Sales Information: Tickets go on sale Friday October 10th, 2008 $48, plus applicable service fees. | 12/7 | Job For A Cowboy - Job For A Cowboy with Hate Eternal, All Shall Perish, Animosity and Annotations of an Autopsy Valarium 6:30 PM Sunday, December 7th Doors open at 6:00 PM Unleashing a relentless fusion of hardcore and death metal with the precision guitar attack of progressive metal, Job for a Cowboy was formed in Glendale, AZ, in 2002. In 2005, the band recorded a six-song EP, Doom, that attracted the attention of Arizona independent label King of the Monsters, who distributed the disc after an initial self-released pressing by the band. Doom earned a potent buzz in metal circles, enhanced by extensive touring, and Metal Blade Records signed the band in 2006, reissuing Doom with a bonus track. Recorded between road trips with producer Andy Sneap at the controls, the group's first album, Genesis, was released in May 2007 by Metal Blade, with lots more touring to follow. | 12/8 | Theory of a Deadman - Theory of a Deadman with Pop Evil Valarium 8:00 PM Monday, December 8th Doors open at 7:00 PM Vancouver's Theory of a Deadman became the first act to sign with Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger's 604 Records imprint in 2001. Tyler Connolly (vocals/guitar) reportedly slipped a copy of the band's demo to Kroeger at a post-concert party and the two were soon collaborating on songs together. One of these, "Invisible Man," was used as the B-side for 2002's wildly successful Spider-Man theme, "Hero" and anticipated Theory of a Deadman's self-titled debut of the same year. Also featuring Dave Brenner (guitar), Dean Back (bass), and Tim Hart (drums), the album's hook-laden, emotional hard rock sounded very similar to their celebrity benefactor's band -- almost disturbingly so, actually. But a healthy touring workload and simple maturation ultimately helped Theory of a Deadman break out of that confining stylistic box for their more varied and distinctive sophomore effort, Gasoline. Theory of a Deadman had a simple but daunting goal for its third album: to make the greatest record possible. From the swirling grind of "By the Way" to the nasty snarl of "Crutch" to the soaring melodicism of "Not Meant to Be," Scars & Souvenirs is a broad-reaching endeavor that puts Connolly, guitarist Dave Brenner and bassist Dean Back high in the rock pantheon, achieving creative growth without sacrificing the hard-hitting power that got them there in the first place. | 12/11 | Marc Broussard - The son of Louisiana Hall of Fame guitarist Ted Broussard, Marc grew up surrounded by the diverse musical panorama for which his home state is renowned. Music informed his life from the get-go, whether it was joining his dad onstage at various clubs or singing in the Catholic University church choir. As he hit his teens, Broussard was already an accomplished artist, the veteran of a string of local bands and solo acoustic performances, known for tearing up the stage with the raw-throated gusto and worldly emotive power of a man three times his age. Broussard made his recorded debut in 2002 with the remarkably mature independent release, Momentary Setback. He drew coast-to-coast acclaim in 2004 with his major-label debut, Carencro, a full-blooded take on the blues, soul, Cajun music, rock, and swamp-pop of his native Louisiana. With his emotive and dynamic voice, Broussard quickly won over a legion of devoted fans via nearly non-stop roadwork, including countless headline shows; show-stopping sets at festivals like South By Southwest, Bonnaroo, and of course, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Now, Broussard is back in Knoxville after a successful Sundown in the City performance and ready to bring some “Bayou Soul” to the Bijou Theatre! | 12/19 | Taking Back Sunday - Taking Back Sunday w/ Envy on the Coast Valarium 7:30 PM Friday, December 19th Doors open at 7:00 PM For Taking Back Sunday, the past few years have been as non-stop as the music on their latest album, Louder Now. The New York-based melodic hardcore quintet’s third album was released on April 25. The hubbub surrounding Taking Back Sunday shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s heard Louder Now. The high-octane drumming and blazing syncopated riffs that rain down on its opening track, “What’s It Feel Like to Be a Ghost,” make it clear that these guys meant business when they went into the studio with producer Eric Valentine (Queens Of The Stone Age, Third Eye Blind) to record the follow-up to their 2004 best-selling album Where You Want To Be. Their intention was to bottle the lightning that this powerful band generates whenever they hit the stage. Taking Back Sunday set out to “create something that we considered timeless,” says the band of Louder Now. “We didn’t want something that people would listen to in 10 years and say, ‘That’s from 2006 when all the records sounded like that.’ We wanted people to listen to it in 10 years and say, ‘Hell, yeah, turn that up!’” Sales Information: Tickets go on sale Saturday October 11th, 2008 $27.50 Advance/$30.00 Doors plus applicable service fees Venue: Valarium 865-522-2820 Ticket Sales Outlets: All Tickets Unlimited Locations 1213 Western Avenue Knoxville, TN |
